Deep within us all is a deep yearning for something to believe in; something that is larger than life, and something that is good. In looking at our world with a fresh set of eyes and an open mind, the first thing that one might notice, is the fact that our universe is deeply religious and has many different religious views. These different views give us a wide range of religious paths with which to choose from on our quest for spirituality.

The definition of religion can be defined in several different ways, including: a shared belief system among a group of people, a collection of shared cultural and supernatural beliefs including day to day and world views, and a belief system that enables us to deal with our problems in the right manner. Most religions involve the transformation of the human spirit, and teach us how to live and grow together. Religion helps to shape our social systems and guide our moral conduct. Lastly, religion gives us our concepts of good and evil, right and wrong, true and untrue.

The different religions of the world today are widely diverse and offer a wide variety of different belief systems. Some religious groups believe in many gods, while others only one; some are traditional, others contemporary, some place emphasis on their beliefs,   other’s concentrate on the practices of those beliefs. We have religions that worship nature and some that worship animals. We have religions that chant, meditate, fast, handle snakes, and embark on pilgrimages. The Hindu religion believes in many gods and goddesses, whereas Buddhism believes in none. Muslims believe in a powerful but distant God and Christianity believe in a loving and approachable one. Hindu’s embark on an individual journey to be free from desire, while Buddhist try to gain release from Karma.
