How were factors that may reduce prejudice demonstrated in the film ‘Remember the Titans’?


The film Remember the Titans showed us many examples of prejudice, racism and discrimination. Based on a real story the film shows us the extreme prejudice the white community had on the black community in the early 1970s and vice versa. In the beginning of the film the prejudice shown towards the black community was at the highest point. When Bill Yoast the current coach for the T.C Williams High School football team steps down as head coach and is replaced by the non-white African American Herman Boone, the tension between the black and white communities hit breaking point. Most of the white players threatened to quit the team if Herman Boone was the coach. “I aint playing for no Coach Coon!” Coach Yoast then rejoins the team as defensive coordinator and assistant coach to Coach Boone.

When the whole squad is assembled for the first time Coach Boone noted and was fully aware of the tension and distrust between the white players and the black players. As a way to assert his position as head coach, Coach Boone publically embarrasses captain Gerry Bertier, who is white and was showing attitude towards Boone. When the players head of to football camp Coach Boone, as a way to try to eliminate the prejudice between the two groups, employs the use of ‘mutual independence’ and forces the players to get to know each other and initiate conversation between the blacks and the whites. Coach Boone also used ‘sustained contact’ when he made the offensive line bus and eat together as well as the defensive line, regardless of colour. In one scene Coach Boone wakes the team up in the early morning and takes them to a cemetery where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought. Coach Boone then continues to deliver a speech about hatred and respect. “If we don't come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were.
