  1. What are the similarities between descriptive and inferential statistics?   What are the differences?   When should you use descriptive and inferential statistics?

      Data analysis requires the use of both descriptive and inferential statistics.   Inferential and descriptive statistics can be used together in an experiment to determine if effects have occurred.   “On the basis of the descriptive and inferential statistics, researchers are able to make claims about what they have found” (Shaughnessy, Zechmeister, & Zechmeister, 2009).   Both descriptive and inferential statistics looks are a sample population.
      The difference between the two statistics is that descriptive statistics are used to describe the data collected and inferential statistics is used to come up with a conclusion or predictions about the collect data.   Graphs and frequency distribution techniques are used when researchers want to display data.   Furthermore, descriptive statistics measures data through the use of central tendency.   Three common measures are mode, mean, and median.   When dealing with inferential statistics is used to test hypotheses.   Three common measures are scatter-plots, correlation coefficient, and t-tests.
      Descriptive statistics should be used when researchers want to reduce large amounts of data into a small summary.   Inferential statistics is best used to test the relationship between two variables.
