Nervous. Excited, but nervous.   Would I be able to do this? What if I fell and got hurt? Everyone says it would be easy but I was still had my doubts. My friends were coaching me on what to do as we climbed the chairlift to the peak. “Pizza and French fries,” they repeated, giving me the basics of the sport. Their voices were muzzled, though, as I was intently focused on my mental preparation. My mind was racing with the endless possibilities of what could occur. Doubt, fear, and anxiety created a mental block to the world around me. I shook my head side-to-side, trying to clear my mind and relax. I began to feel the cool, crisp air as we glided up the face of the mountain. The sun glistened off the fresh powder and created a glare on my goggles. I wiggled my boots and skis around to get a feel for what was going to support my body down the slopes. Confidence began to grow from within as we neared the peak.
We exited the chairlift and turned to face the cliff. There it was. Terror struck me and I was frozen. I wanted to turn around and ride the lift back to the bottom.   I stood still, looking down the enormity of the mountain. Was I really about to go down this? I heard a faint “C’mon, Mike. Let’s go, you’ll be fine,” as my friend made his way down the slope. “Well, here goes nothing,” I thought. Swallowing my fear, I thrust my poles in the powder and pushed with all my might. My skis began to free themselves from the sultry snow. Coasting slowly at first, getting a feel for what was ahead of me, I could feel the anxiety seep from my pores. I kept my feet...
