Madinah is a city in Hejaz region also called Taiba , which lies 447 kilometers north of the Holy City of Makkah, it is the second holiest city in Islam. Before the advent of Islam, the city was known as Yathrib. The city contains al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque), which is the burial place of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
Hijra - the migration of the Prophet and his followers to Madinah - marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar “the Hijri year” corresponding to the year 622AD.

Al-Hijaz Railroad Line was established by the decision of the Ottoman Sultan. originally built to transport pilgrims from the city of Damascus in Syria to the city of Madina in Saudi Arabia. It was completed in 1908, but was severely damaged during the First World War. It was established to facilitate the movement of pilgrims to Makkah.
