Sexting: The New Form of Intimacy?  
Before the Internet and mobile phones, many people talked face-to-face or at home on their “home” phones to build an intimate relationship. There was nothing instant about waiting for an hour or even a few days for someone to call. Now   technology has provided a way to stay connected even on the go, thus the invention of mobile phones.
    When introduced to the consumer market, the cell phone looked like a big bulky refrigerator, in the present it has evolved into a small sleek computer called the “smart phone.” Smart phones are the new revolution of mobile phones; their capabilities are endless when it comes to performance, but with this groundbreaking technology comes adverse effects. In the past, criminal activities were limited to personal contact whereas in the present the criminal element is constructed in a more sophisticated way via the Internet. The Smart phone has been used for more than making calls, checking e-mails, or surfing the web, it is also used for sending explicit messages and images. This form of activity has become more popular with teenagers who use the method called “sexting” as new way, in their eyes, of having safe sex. In an article written by Kathleen Berchelmann director of the St. Louis Children's Hospital Social Media Team, “15% of youths with cell phones sext, and those who sext are more likely to be sexually active and more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior” (Berchelmann).   Teens with cell phones are intrigued by the nude images that heighten their curiosity to engage in unprotected sex. This behavior contributes to number of cases involving teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Many look at male teenagers as the main perpetrator in this lascivious act, apparently females are more involved than expected but not without rhyme or reason.
