Sexual Assault and Misconduct within the Military

      I chose to discuss the ethical dysfunctions within the military, as I have observed over the past few years. For as long as military history has existed, there has always been a standard to how servicemen and women should and will conduct themselves with regards to dealing with, addressing, reporting and minimizing any acts of sexual assault and misconduct, to a zero tolerance. Army Regulation (AR) 600-20 explains in length the reporting and prevention of such acts as sexual assault and misconduct.

      Sexual assault is nothing new to the military and has been going on for many years. If that’s the case, then why should this topic be the first to come to mind when I think of ethical dysfunctions headlining the news? My reasoning is because more recently there are notably more senior ranking officials being named on these lewd acts of misconduct. The military has spent millions of dollars on educating and training the military on the prevention of these types of incidents, but to learn that it is not the junior military men and women that constantly need the training is just amazing. The leaders of the military that we have charged with the duties of ensuring good order and discipline amongst the ranks of the military seem to require the most training and education on this serious crime.

      More and more senior leaders within the military are being relieved and removed from their positions, and even forced out of the military, because of one of two things: 1) they knew of these acts being committed and did nothing about it; 2) they were the ones committing these acts and used their ranks and position to attain personal pleasure and profit by preying on the young and junior ranks. More and more leaders are acting irresponsibly by committing these acts and are now being shown to the public their faces of shame.
