Below is an essay on "Smart Goals" from Anti Essays, your source for research papers, essays, and term paper examples.

SMART is a mnemonic acronym, giving criteria to guide in the setting of objectives, for example in project management, employee-performance management and personal development. The letters S and M usually mean specific and measurable. The other letters have meant different things to different authors, as described below. Additional letters have been added by some authors.
SMART criteria are commonly attributed to Peter Drucker's management by objectives concept. The first-known use of the term occurs in the November 1981 issue of Management Review by George T. Doran. The principal advantage of SMART objectives is that they are easier to understand and to know when they have been done.

M - measurable, meaningful, motivational
A - agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented
R - realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented
T - time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable
This provides a broader definition that will help you to be successful in both your business and personal life.

*Where:     Identify a location.
*When:     Establish a time frame.
*Which:     Identify requirements and constraints.
*Why:       Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
EXAMPLE:   A general goal would be, “Get in shape.” But a specific goal would say, “Join a health club and workout 3 days a week.”
