Social and Cultural Diversity in School
Students in schools today need a learning environment that encourages positive social interactions. Teachers and students face an increase in cultural and social diversities among the classroom and it is vital to support those students. Creating a respectful and supportive learning environment is crucial to the success of students. Students should feel safe, respected and valued in order to learn new skills throughout their learning process (Burden).
The learning environment in a classroom should include the physical setting as well as an emotional setting. Incorporating how the student may feel or respond to the setting encourages learning (Lopez). Several steps may be taken in order to ensure a positive learning setting. Ensuring comfort, health and safety support a positive environment. Providing support, praise and feedback gives students motivation to learn, make mistakes and accomplish new things. Establishing rules for conduct and delivering discipline for misconduct is a means of keeping order in the classroom and ensures a positive learning environment.
Several diverse issues affect students in the classroom. These issues may include race, ethnicity, gender, academic abilities, learning styles, socioeconomic status and culture. It is important to be sensitive to the many differences among students and to factors in our society that are directly affecting student’s lives (Ryan, Cooper). Being aware of and understanding the basic needs of students helps accommodate these diverse needs of students.
