I’ve always enjoyed the topic of substance abuse.   It has always been something my family has been involved in; this includes both sides of my family tree.   My whole family has always had issues with alcohol and various other drugs.   I never realized what effects this had on the body with a human’s decision making process and what it can do to a person’s job, family, or education.   I became really fascinated as we were assigned this paper.   I was sitting at work wondering what I was going to write my paper on.   As soon as I finished that thought I looked up and saw that the Police were bringing in another suicidal patient due to them being intoxicated.   I really started to judge the person and to judge the officer.   I knew I had to check myself at the door and I knew I needed to learn more about the topic before I could judge.   We then went on two tours and that changed my whole perception on the ideas of reform and treatment instead of just believing the “tough on crime” approach.   I started to realize that substance abuse is definitely a contender for number one issue when it comes to recidivism.  
I feel that knowing what substance abuse is and why it is so troubling for people to get victory over.   Having an understanding of what substance abuse is will help you realize why people get into trouble after they become under the influence and ultimately addicted.   Substance abuse can simply be defined as a pattern of harmful use of any substance for mood-altering purposes.   Medline's medical encyclopedia defines drug abuse as "the use of illicit drugs or the abuse of prescription or over-the-counter drugs for purposes other than those for which they are indicated or in a manner or in quantities other than directed.”   This is dangerous because, when you take these substances it can throw off the chemical balances in your brain.   This will cause you to crave and feel as if you need these various substances to survive and you will be willing to do anything to get...
