Jeanette has stressed to her mom the fact that her dad is the way he is because he does not have a “strong woman” to control him. When mom leaves to go to renew her teaching license, she is gone for 2 months. She leaves Jeanette with 200$ for them to live off of. I think that during this time there was a huge change in Jeanette she saw her father for the manipulate man that he was. He continually asked her for money, although she was hesitating to give it to him, she eventually gave in over and over. When her dad told her that in order to get pay back the money she had to go with him to bar so he could win it back. This is where Jeanette was introduced to a man named Robby, her dad played pool with him and Robby got more intoxicated and more flirtaous with Jeanette. Towards end of night after Rex had got him for a good amount of money, he yelled to Rex “Hey I’m gonna take your girl upstairs ok?” He basically gave his daughter to him and only said to “holler if she needed him”. He knew what was going to happen and if it wasn’t for Jeanette being cunning and telling the guy, after he had pinned her down that “most men don’t like to screw me, because of my scars”. She got herself out of there and back to her dad. He told her that he knew she could take care of herself, “Like when I threw you in water, you might have been convinced you were gonna drown, but I knew you could swim.” It is sad to see a father put his daughter into such un-safe conditions. But his behaviors are right on line with what addicts do to get what they want, they are the best manipulators and in these few chapters it is clear to see that he is willing to do whatever it takes to get his fix.
