Obtaining a Sustainable Community
In one definition, Webster defines a community as, “a unified body of individuals and people with common interests living in a particular area.” I believe a community should be more than that definition. A community should be a place where people hold the same values for everyone, share common interests, look-out for and protect one another. However, it’s hard to imagine such a place. There is a commonality in the readings of King, Noddings and Gansberg, where a community that holds compassion and respect for one another will flourish, but a community without will not maintain sustainability.
One point Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. tried to get across in 1963 in “Letter From The Birmingham City Jail” was to be respectful and treat members of society equally. There cannot be prejudice if there is to be a sustainable community. He hoped that someday this could be a great nation, united as a whole and not divided. “Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear-drenched communities and in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty” (King, 1963).
Some communities struggle to maintain or even reach sustainability because of other problems. “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call the Police” by Martin Gansburg, discusses how simple a murderer got away with the crime. “The assailant had three chances to kill this woman during a 35-minute period. He returned twice to complete the job. If we had been called when he first attacked, the woman might not be dead now” (Gansberg, 1964). The man left both times because he was scared off by neighbors’ lights and other sounds.
