Sweden’s Welfare System V. United States Welfare System
Both the United States and Sweden have State Welfare Systems.   They are very similar in the fact that they provide many of the same things including financial assistance, food assistance, education, medical aide, child care, and housing assistance just to name a few.   The difference is the time each country devotes to these individuals and the stipulations put on them to receive the help.   Sweden believes in a universal social insurance that is eligible to all citizens from the time they are born until the day they die. (“Social welfare,” 2012).   The United States on the other hand has time restraints on how long a person can receive the assistance and it requires the individual to either have an active job or to go to school to get a job. (Kendall, 2010, p. 38).   The United States welfare system is meant to be a temporary fix.
One of the large-scale social and political factors that affect how Sweden’s welfare is organized and provided seems to be the taxes put in place to make Sweden’s welfare program so successful.   Sweden is one of the most successful welfare states in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).   Sweden has a higher level of social spending to the GDP (gross domestic product) than any other nation but this all comes from taxes.   Every want and need is taxed.   Your income is taxed at a higher rate than any other industrialized nation, but most if not all of that money goes into the state welfare program.   This is why they are able to provide such access to education and health care.   Every person in Sweden has equal access to the public health care services. (Ginsburg, Rosenthal, 2006).   It is publicly funded and run by the county councils.   The taxes are what finance the health care system primarily.   The welfare system is put in the hands of the public and the private sectors because of these taxes....
