The Characterization of Waldeen:
Waldeen is like many other suburban housewives. She is insecure about herself and she needs support from other people to function properly. It seems to me that she has a hard time letting go of the past thereby preventing her from moving on with her life. She is going through a tough period in her life due to her recent devoice. She is finding it hard to cope with many of her everyday tasks including raising her daughter. She believes that families cannot “shift membership” and that Joe McClain “will turn out to be just like” her first husband. The divorce have left her in a void, afraid of change and to live her life to the fullest and try new things because of what happed with her ex-husband. She is afraid to rush into a new relationship because she is thinks it’s going to end up like her marriage with Holly´s father Joe Murdock. Her new boyfriend Joe McClain is trying to help her move on but she is convinced that she will never be able to leave her past behind. Waldeen does not want to repeat mistakes or to redefine family, but she loves Joe and wants to do what is best for her and Holly. In the end of the story she finally breaks the pattern of despair and accepts that not everything in life is certain and sometimes you just have to take a chance and see where life takes you.
