The death penalty, or capital punishment, as it is often referred to is an effective means of not only punishment, but also enforcement of justice. All throughout the course of history man has used death as means of the ultimate chastisement. Capital punishment should be not only legalized, but also swiftly enforced in the United States.   Although in the eyes of many the death penalty may be seen as cruel and inhumane, it is truly the most effective punishment for those who have committed the ultimate transgressions against mankind. When an inmate is sentenced to the death, it is with just cause and reason. Thousands have attacked the death penalty and made claims of false sentencing, however, one false sentencing does not justify the exemption of the thousands of cold-hearted murders, rapists, terrorists, pedophiles, etc. Capital punishment should be legalized in all fifty states because it is the most effective means of retribution in our country's justice system.
Capital punishment not only punishes the transgressor, it also saves innocent civilians from becoming victims. By executing a murderer, their ability to harm others is taken away perennially. This reason alone should suffice as vindication for the death penalty. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, "Of the 272,111 persons released from prisons in 15 states in 1994, an estimated 67.5% were rearrested for a felony or serious misdemeanor within 3 years, 46.9% were reconvicted, and 25.4% resentenced to prison for a new crime." Nearly 70% of released convicts were rearrested within the short period of 3 years. Approximately 200,000 crimes would not have been committed if there were more serious repercussions to their heinous crimes. Moreover, if a convicted murder were to receive the minimal jail time of 10 years for a murder, this would still allow him or her to be reintroduced into the general public after being rightfully convicted of homicide.
