The idea of war is one that has existed for eons. Ever since man could make a weapon, war has always been on the horizon. Wars have been fought over a plethora of issues, from human rights, to money to even spices; the idea of one group of men conquering another adds an element of power to which also adds a certain degree of desire to do war. Man is a species unique to this idea, no other creature in nature is capable of such action. Man is a complex being. There are few things that can match war’s historic presence in this world and one of them is the permanently synonymous idea of anti war. The concept of anti war is quite self-explanatory, it is the opposition of war. Anti war has an equally varied range to its competitor. Anti war efforts have gone from pin up leaflets to protest rallies to full day music concerts. Anti war literature is particularly intriguing.   There are many authors who have attempted to write anti war literature and have achieved varied amount of success with their work. Anti war literature is not only inspirational protest songs or glorified anthems but, through the literal prowess of the majority of authors, they can be considered as literature for a much wider audience.

If one looks at Edna St Vincent Millay’s Conscientious Objector, one can see that it is a perfect piece of anti war literature. Millay uses the technique of free verse, which makes the poem have the effect of being delivered as a speech. The lines like “I shall die, but that is all I shall do for Death.” (Millay 1), “I will not tell him the whereabouts of my friends nor of my enemies either.” (Millay 16-17), and “Though he promise me much, I will not map him the route to any man’s door.” (Millay 18-19) all sound like lines delivered at an anti war protest.
