The Furnace: Lockdown is horror at its finest, written by Alexander Gordon Smith and published in 2009; this book surpasses any horror novel ever published. Violence, friendship and survival are the dominate themes explored in this book and although contrary to popular belief, horror books also have aspects of forgiveness and compassions. This book’s protagonist, Alex, is falsely accused of murdering his best friend and thereby sentenced to life imprisonment. He is sent to The Furnace- the world’s most vicious and violent prison, where friendship is forbidden. But in order to survive, Alex defies the laws and makes new friends, where he is stretched to the limits and torn to choose between loyalty to his friends or loyalty to thugs. He quickly learns that The Furnace is no place to make mistakes, with several encounters that result in dire consequences.   Alexander Gordon Smith is educating readers that fist is not the solution to every problem, but sometimes persuasion can be the answer. He is sentenced to life incarceration in The Furnace. Alex is falsely convicted and pleads with the judge that he is innocent, but the judge ignores him. Upon entry to...
