The saying ‘An eye for an eye’ is often used and heard in everyday life but in the play ‘Hamlet’ by William Shakespeare, its been taken to a whole new level. Revenge is something that causes the downfall of a person. Hamlet, Fortinbras and Laertes all seek revenge of their father’s death. When revenge and determination are bound together it leads only to one thing: destruction. Even relationships are destroyed when one seeks revenge. When an individual seek for revenge it causes them to take irrational decisions.
In the play, Hamlet is determined to take revenge of his beloved father, King Hamlet, who is murdered by his own brother Claudius. Hamlet’s vengeance derives him to madness and extreme violence. Hamlet is not the only one looking for revenge, Laertes too is on the same path. Its often said revenge is a dish best served cold but it also has a consuming nature that could easily manipulate a person’s mind. Claudius manipulates Laertes mind by saying, “No place indeed should murder sanctuarize; revenge should have no bounds... you may choose a sword unbated, and in a pass of practice requite him for your fathers.” (iv, vii, 127) and made him agree to kill Hamlet to avenge his father’s death and sister’s insanity, which leads to further destruction. This hunger of revenge eats up Laertes, Hamlet and all royal family. Revenge and determination destroys everything, it leaves individual unable to think what is right and what is wrong.
