The History of Slavery

    Every historian has a different opinion on the beginning of slavery. One of the most debatable issues on the history of slavery is, was it really as bad as everyone thought? After reading “How did American Slavery Begin?” by Edward Countryman, I picked out three essays of the five that seemed most appropriate to my argument, I have come to the conclusion that some of these authors believe that slavery was avoidable, and done by choice. The argument I am stating is that slavery was always bad, and never was there a time where slavery benefited Africans, or other ethnicities at that. I noticed that almost all the authors of these essays were trying to rid slavery of its bad history and almost praise it in a way, which upsets me greatly. Again, all of these are opinions; I am just clearly stating my opinion and what I think of the other author’s opinions. The three essays I chose to write on were “Was the early ‘European Atlantic’ also an African Atlantic?” by Ira Berlin. “How did the subject of slavery enter the American law?” by A. Leon Higginbotham Jr., and “Did American freedom rest upon American slavery?” by Edmund S. Morgan. In the following paragraphs, I will explain the essays in question, and how they relate to my argument.

    The first essay, by Ira Berlin focuses on who the “creoles” really were. Because they were not Africans, they had mixed blood with Europeans. Berlin also talks about how these creoles were denied of many rights, just because they had African blood in them. He argues that there might have been more African decent people in Europe than expected, meaning that they were technically the superiority even though they were treated otherwise. And when these creoles came to America they came by choice, because they knew if they went there and worked for a few years, they would have all the freedom they could ever imagined.
