Sticks and Stones
Every child is familiar with the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.” Nowadays, kids might be more familiar with the words of Dumbledore when he says, “Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it.”   (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2). Speaking comes to most people as naturally as breathing and we think little of the power of words. On many occasions our words are uttered without conscious thought, in fact we rarely stop and think about what we are saying. Lynda Barry captures the essence of the power of words in several chapters of her book “100 Demons.” Two chapters in particular spoke to me about the power of words. “Dancing” and “Hate” evoked many questions. What is it within a child that allows him to provide truth with such raw passion like we find in her chapter “Hate?” Could it be his lack of emotional maturity or just that he is socially inept? Why do adults feel the need to silence the brutal honesty that children feel after a certain age? All these questions are worth answering but the question at the core is something deeper. Are words so powerful that one honest phrase can change your entire life?
Thousands of words pour out of our mouths each day as our thoughts, opinions, judgments and beliefs are feely expressed. Often, however, we are oblivious to the positive or negative effect these words have on us as well as the people around us. I use to think that the words I would say only affected the people I was directing them towards. The older I get I realize that the words I speak affect me as well as the unsuspecting victims who happen to be in earshot of my now manifested attitude. In “Dancing”, Barry talks about how a simple phrase changed her entire world. Barry tells us about how she enjoyed dancing and never thought about how ridiculous she looked.
