The Printed Book versus the Digital Text
Since the invention of the printing press, technological developments have been constant and ever growing. Over the years, these developments in technology have resulted in a new age. There is a large shift taking place toward presenting information in a digital text format via the internet. As it stands, there is a struggle between print and digital text; increasingly, the digital text seems to win due to its convenience. Although digital text is a relatively new medium, it still presents old content without making any modifications to utilize all the new possibilities made available in a digital format. Digital text’s reliance on the printed medium is especially interesting when considering Marshall McLuhan’s statement that "the content of the medium is never the message because the content is always the old medium". McLuhan predicted something that most others had not even considered. McLuhan recognized that if content was to be conveyed in a new medium, it had to be made specifically for that medium to communicate information in a way that utilized the possibilities and potential of the new medium.

What would happen if the opposite occurred, and the old medium was given new content? Specifically, what would happen if content from the digital realm was presented in the form of a book? In reality it would not give new meaning to the book but instead give the reader a certain realization of the potential and possibilities available with digital text.   In House of Leaves, this is very much true. While House of Leaves is considered a novel, it only remotely identifies as one in the way that it is comprised of two stories involving devices such as plot, character development, conflict and its own unique world.
