"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost (Clugston, 2010, 2.2) is a poem that is often interpreted by readers. Thus, with reference to “The Road Not Taken,” a poem in which the word not functions as what I would call a word of commanding deference- that is, as a word that seems to defer to larger meanings but actually commands them, one can readily see that on the level of conscious meaning, the word road is misused. (Cervo, 1989) The correct word would have been path. (Cervo, 1989) The poem speaks of a common scenario on how you need to choose your path in life. A traveler has come at a crossroads and is forced to make a choice on which "road", or path of life, he needs to take. Both paths are inspected equally; the traveler makes a choice and continues down the road. The common interpretation is that the author is happy with this choice he has made. He decided to choose the road less traveled, and for this he is able to say "with a sigh" in his old age that he has chosen the correct road, and that it has changed his life for the better. The decision he made has paid off, he is not just a regular person, and he’s lived an adventure by choosing the less traveled road. While reading it seems as though the author doesn’t know which road would be best and that he wants to convince the readers that he has chosen the correct one.
The first stanza is interpreted as a person coming to an important part in their life, some life changing that needs deep thought. The line “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (2010, line 18) comes to an event of some magnitude. However, the author doesn’t point out the significance of this person’s life. We are faced everyday with many roads in our lives and we have to make a choice on whether the road we choose would be the best road.
