Essay on a role of Colleges in Encouraging students to vote
My reflection on how to encourage students to vote is very important to me. I am a college student and also an educator with one college child. This election is probably the most important election due to my family situation. We now have to look at college tuition, finical aid, and uncertain economic times. As a college student, I too am guilty of not voting especially in the state election. Not because I didn’t feel my vote did not count but because I was lazy and did not get out and vote that day. I lost my job as a teacher due to the election of the school board candidates that felt like my job needed to be cut. My collogues and I got together and wrote the governor, school board members and other local elected officials about why we should keep our jobs. At first they said,” no we don’t have the funds”, but we kept pushing the issue and within two months we were back to work. So yes, I favor professors encouraging college students to vote. The more we educate students on this subject, the less withdrawal we will have at the polls. I think it’s great what Johnson C. Smith is doing on our college campus. The debate watch party, students helping to register students to vote, and teachers informing students about the campaign with facts are all positive reinforcement. This gives students going to the polls, a better understanding of which candidate is best for them.
