In Albert Camus’s novel The Stranger, Camus draws Meursault, the protagonist, as a French absurd character that has existential acts and lives in Algeria, a French colony in the 1950s. Meursault is a type of character that cannot show feelings directly.   By using this existential behavior on Meursault, readers understand that he is an absurd character, while he is not really because he shows feelings in Camus’s indirect language. Meursault’s mother dies in the beginning of the story and this is the most obvious part where he does not show feelings directly. Later in the story, again his absurdity makes Meursault a criminal, when he kills an Arab at a beach because the strong sun was striking his forehead and the sand was all over is face. He ends up getting executed for this absurdity and for killing a person just because of his physical discomfort. The literary components that are in the opening passages of the story, shows how Meursault has feelings and that he is actually sad about his mother’s death, but does not know how to show these feelings to others.
The opening passages are the passages when Meursault’s mother dies. They describe the day he got the news of his mother’s death, his journey to Marengo and to the funeral. These events include when Meursault catches the bus, his two kilometers walk to his mother’s home, and the conversations he had with the director and the caretaker at home and in the funeral. They all come before he sits with the caretaker, drink coffee and smoke together, and all of the criticisms possible that Meursault received for not showing obvious feelings after his mother’s death. When readers read the part before the passages, they expect Meursault to have a big reaction when he sees his mother’s soul, because he was concerned about how he will reach to Marengo on time, so he can be able to see his mother’s body in the funeral.
