The “Trail of Tears” is the removal of the Indians and “forced relocation” from their homes in Southeastern parts of the US after the “Indian Removal Act of 1830” Many of the Native American Tribes were forced to move to Oklahoma. During the 19th century the US was growing at a rapid pace. The white man considered the Indians to be an obstacle in their eagerness to acquire land to raise cotton. Therefore the “settlers” pressured the US government to take over Indian land. During the years from 1814 to 1824 “Jackson” had “negotiated” treaties which ultimately forced the Natives from their land in the east in exchange for land in the west. The Natives agreed to this in hopes that they might be able to retain some of their land and to avoid “white harassment”. The law stated that the Indians were able to stay on lands within the US but were not able to hold title to them. This was due to the fact that their right to stay on the land came second to the US “right of discovery”. The Natives used “legal means” trying to protect their rights they were looking for safety from the white man who constantly harassed and tormented them. This essay will describe some of the things that took place on the “Trail of Tears” and the abuse the Natives had to suffer during their trip.
    During “The Trail of Tears” which occurred in 1838 the Cherokee Indians were forced from their lands by a greedy government.   They were forced to march to Oklahoma all the while being mistreated and abused. It was a 6 month trip for the Cherokees traveling approximately 800 miles. The Cherokees were forced to march through horrible weather conditions such as snow, rainy conditions, and severe cold.
