Traditionally humans have chosen mates, married, had children, and depended upon the union of marriage for emotional and financial stability. However, some couples are unable to sustain their relationships and opt for divorce. Even with all the help and resources that are available, divorce still occurs with frequency. The two obvious causes of divorce are infidelity and money problems, but lesser discussed issues are women’s changing social roles, lack of communication between couples, and the stress of competing in everyday modern life.

The first cause of divorce is that women roles have changed. In the past, men were the bread winners, and women were housewives. They were responsible for housekeeping, cooking, raising children, and dedicating themselves to their husband’s needs. With current social standards women can now work outside while men share household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and caring for the children. Equal opportunity employment has created cracks in “the glass ceiling” and given females the opportunity to advance themselves educationally and occupationally. No longer are the studies of engineering, medicine, law, and the military monopolized by the male gender. With these new-found opportunities, women are now able to achieve financial independence and stability.   They no longer need a man for recognition of their worth. This creates conflict in a male dominated world. It threatens the masculinity of husbands and often leads to the destruction of marriages.

The next cause of increased divorce is lack of communication. Because of work schedules in each family, people become very busy and have inadequate time to talk to their partners about their problems which increases the struggles couples face. Some couples do not communicate at all, and as a consequence little things can grow into huge problems, like something as simple as chores not being done, resulting in fights and arguments.   To me, it’s obvious that the more you talk in...
