“To be or not to be… that is the question”.   More people know this line than have actually read Shakespeare.   It resonates with us, whether we are broody teenagers lounging in our rooms hating our parents, or middle aged women wondering whether our lives are really over…already.   My favorite assignment in this class so far has been watching the Hamlet soliloquys.   The variation of tone and flavor that an actor can put on these overly famous words is breathtaking.   My favorite by far, was the performance by David Tennant.

  Tennant’s soliloquy begins with his profile in shadow moving up to lean against a wall.   The vision is stark, his face is gaunt, the only colors black and cream.   He looks tired and haunted.   As Tennant stops and leans, he takes a moment to breathe before he begins to speak.   The audience can see him thinking.   When he says “To die…to sleep” he closes his eyes and a look of longing comes over his face.   We are left breathing in his emotion, knowing that he is looking for rest from his tragedies, however it may come.   Then Tennant opens his eyes, and continues speaking in a quiet breathy voice.     We are seeing a full frontal view of his face now but he is not talking to the audience.   His eyes are focused on a point a little bit down and to the left of the camera that is filming.   This implies that he is only speaking to himself.   Throughout the speech he is focused, grieving.   Then at the words “pale cast of thought”: his lips curl into a snarl and his voice rings more solid.   It is disgust or anger that is coming across.   The final view we have of him in this clip is him rising out of his reverie, distracted by Ophelia.   This performance was majestic and evocative of a sensitive, more modern Hamlet.

In contrast, Branagh’s Hamlet seems almost classic in its interpretation.   The clip starts off with Hamlet looking at himself in the mirror. His coat is open and he looks a little bit disheveled.   Like with Tennant, the colors are cream and...
