The Tuskegee Syphilis Study (TSUS) was a clinical study based in Tuskegee, Alabama by the U.S Public Health Service. The main purpose of the testing was to “study the course of syphilis in blacks and to compare the course of the disease against a study on syphilis in whites.” (Pg 39; 2) There was a major problem with this study and the way it was conducted. There were many ethical question raised as to whether the effects of syphilis on black males was worthy of study.  
The main issue raised was that the subjects tested weren’t told what they were being tested for. Instead, they were “told they that were being tested for bad blood, a Southern catchphrase for a variety of illnesses. They were not informed that they had syphilis or given information about what syphilis was, how it was transmitted, or how it could be treated.”   (Pg 39; 4) Because of the problems with TSUS there have been many changes with the method clinical studies on human subjects can be conducted. “In 1991, the US Department of Health and Human Services issued revised regulations on using human subjects in research. In order for persons to give legally effective informed consent the researchers must disclose eight elements of information about the study.” (Pg 42, 3) Disclosed information included a description of reasonable foreseeable risks, a description of reasonable expected benefits, and a disclosure of appropriate alternatives. TSUS was an unbelievably unpleasant study and helped to reform how clinical studies are conducted today.
The AIDS clinical Trial Group Study 076 (ACTG 076), like the Tuskegee Syphilis Study also raised many ethical questions. The main purpose of ACTG 076 was to “show that a regimen of zidovudine administered to pregnant mothers and newborns decreased the likelihood of HIV transmission from mother to child.”(pg 59; 1) ACTG 076 can be compared to TSUS in that the subjects used had no insight on what they were being tested or treated for.
