Where is Vietnam located geographically?
Vietnam occupies the eastern and southern part of the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia, with the South China Sea along its entire coast. China is to the north and Laos and Cambodia are to the west.
Why did the war start? What were the causes? Who was the war between?
The war was between the American’s and the Vietnamese. The war started because communism was searching to expand in Vietnam much the way it had attempted to expand in Korea, and the USA had a policy to control, to hold the communists to what they had without expanding, and they were also afraid that if Vietnam became communists, so would other nearby countries, falling like domino's to the communists.
How long did the war go for? When did it start, when did it end?
Before the Americans got involved Vietnam had been fighting each other for many years. Then when the Americans involved themselves the war last enough time to go through 3 American presidents. The war between America and Vietnam lasted from 1969-1975 even after the Americans left the Vietnam people continued to fight.
Why did NZ get involved? What was our contribution?
Between June 1964 and December 1972 around 3500 New Zealand military personnel served in South Vietnam. The difference to the First and Second World War, was that this country's contribution was modest. In 1968 the New Zealand force only totaled 543 members. 37 of these members died while serving for New Zealand and 187 wounded in the Vietnam War. New Zealand’s involvement with Vietnam was extremely controversial as it attracted protesting and condemnation back in New Zealand. In 1965 New Zealanders were marching against the war. For many New Zealanders their countries participation in the war triggered conflict and a hard look at the foreign policy and identity.
