Virtual Meeting Scenario Paper
This virtual scenario presented several catalysts that evolved into obstacles in regards to communication. My original thought was there is an obviously some additional training was needed. Some of the member so team seemed distant almost reserved. The first thought that crossed my mind was how the meeting could have been handled differently. There were offensive comments made among the team members which also lead to a number of obstacles. These consisted of lack of professionalism, stereotyping, and no guidelines for the project or team members. One of the team members from the United States made continual remarks that blatantly were offensive and racially discriminatory toward member of the team that was Hispanic. I have been in a similar situation resulting in my becoming more aware and attentive when in this type of setting or diverse environment allowing me to embrace the different as a gateway to obtaining a tool to add on my tool belt. Perception is also at the core of the communication obstacles. Many times this core aspect is overlooked and disregarded. A person’s perception can be a vital determining factor for how or when a statement or response is made. In this scenario the perception of each member was never taken into consideration.
Another vital aspect was the level of training and professionalism of the team members. The average worker has completed some level of diversity training as part of mandatory training. Sadly the negative comments made were just a reflection of the ignorance that plagues our society as a whole. Regardless of training received a person’s perception. In a more professional setting, it is critically important for every party feel and express respect toward each other. In my own personal experience I elected to not participate.
