The Boer War (also known as the South African War) was fought between the British and the Boer people in an unequal power struggle in South Africa. The Boer War consists of two wars, the first Anglo-Boer war, and the second Anglo-Boer war. The Afrikaners described this as a War of Independence. The first war was fought in 1880-1881, and the second took place between1899-1902. An army of 500,000 British fought against 87,000 Boers, this is because the English wanted all South Africa to come under English rule. The main protagonist of war was mainly white.
The first Anglo-Boer war was fought amongst the Transvaal Boers (Dutch farmers) and the British. In 1877 the British invaded Transvaal, as a result the Boers of the Transvaal revolted against the British annexation of 1877, thus giving this battle the name the Transvaal Rebellion. Primarily, the Transvaal Boers adopted a policy of passive resistance. When the British government made its determination to uphold the annexation clear, the Boers turned to armed resistance in December of 1880. The Pedi were a set of individuals whom spoke diverse dialects of Sotho language and lived within the tribes in Northern Transvaal. In 1877, the Pedi attacked the Boers; the Boers claimed that the British did not adequately assist them when under attack. The British only wished to bring Transvaal by force into a solid union; however this furthered chances of war. On December 11th 1878, the terms forced upon the “Last great king of the Zulu’s” (C.T. Binns), Cetshwayo, required him to disperse his army and accept British rule. However, Cetshwayo refused this requirement, thus war followed at the start of 1879. The Zulus defeated the British at the battle of Isandlwana on January 22nd. (“South African War”)
