Wellness Requirements for Employment
Wellness requirements for employment are organizational policies intended to promote healthy behavior in the workplace (2). Employee wellness programs are a set of communications, activities, and facilities designed to change health-related behaviors in ways to reduce health risks (1). Together, wellness requirements and programs to improve health are an effort to reduce health care costs by using preventative programs and encouraging wellness through company incentives like paying for gym memberships or sports activities.
Worksite fitness and wellness programs have become very popular within the last 15 years. In general, fitness and wellness programs result in increased levels of fitness and a reduction in the risk factors for coronary heart disease. Recent research using control groups has found relations between reduction in health care costs, being absent and turnover and implementation of comprehensive wellness programs (14).
Adults spend most of their day at their workplace so companies can make this a work community focused program. They can also make opportunities for employees to engage in challenges. Integrating these practices and developing a wellness program in an organization will help make it into a high performance work system (10). A vibrant workplace will inspire employees to be more successful (4). A USA Department of Health and Human Services report revealed that at worksites with exercise programs as components of their wellness programs have decreased health care costs by 20-55% (8). A wellness program will use a combination of people, technology, and organizational structure to make use of their resources and opportunities. It has the potential to function smoothly and in result the organization can increase productivity and long term financial performance (11).
