What Opinion do Americans have on the Safety of Genetically Modified Foods Compared to Canada and Great Britain?
A Genetically modified organism is an organism that has had its DNA combined with another organism. This technique is used in products such as medicine, crops, feed and fibers. While there are many advantages to this technique such as higher crop yields and increased resistance to pests or weather there is still much controversy over whether or not genetically modified (GMO) foods are safe for the public. (U.S. Department of Energy Genome Programs)
According to this data America seems to be the country that has the least fear of health hazards pertaining to GMO foods with 54% claiming that they disagree with the idea that GMO foods could pose serious health risks. They also have the lowest percentage of people who believe that there is a health risk associated with GMO foods. Great Britain and Canada both care significantly more than the US about GMO foods however it is difficult to say if one country thinks of it as a risk more than the other because Great Britain has such a large percentage of people who did not participate in the survey, over twice as much as Canada.
Part of the explanation for this may come from another survey done by Gallup. In it they asked participants “As you may know, some food products and medicines are being developed using new scientific techniques. The general area is called “biotechnology” and includes tools such as genetic engineering and genetic modification of food. How closely have you been following the news about this issue – very closely, somewhat closely, not too closely, or not at all?” The results from this question were as follows.
The data reveals that Americans were following news about genetically modified foods the least out of all three countries. This could explain why a lower percentage of...
