The best way to answer to the topic of this essay will be by tracing the history of a well known musical form, so popular nowadays that a particular song is still performed all over the European Continent every year, in every country, in any language. Performers such as Andrea Bocelli, Enya, Frank Sinatra, Elvis and many, many others are responsible for the world wide popularity of this song which is about the Christ birth. The name of the song is “Silent Night, Holy Night”, performed for the very first time almost two hundred years ago in the Church of St. Nicholas, located in Oberndorf, Austria, fifty nine years before Thomas Edison to invent the phonograph. “ Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!”, which is the original Austrian name of the song, belongs to a very old western musical form of seasonal songs with a vivid and sophisticated historical background.   Those songs are known as “carols”.
Thirteenth century is considered as the time and France, as the place, where the carols begin to develop in the western musical culture as songs performed during holidays such as Christmas and Eastern.   However the origins of the carols could be found even earlier in the ninth and tenth centuries when they were very popular among medieval civilization as music for dances. The word “ carol” according to: Poston, Elizabeth.,ed.,1965.The Penguin Book of Christmas Carols.London: Penguin Group., owes its derivation from “...the Old French carole which, in its primitive sense of a secular ring- dance with song,...”.   The form of those early carols is characterised by using binary structure consisted of “stanza” and “burden”, where stanza was some kind of a verse used as a resting point for the dancers and the burden contains the theme of the peace which is repeated in the beginning and on the end of the song as well as between each stanza.
The carol, the way we know it now, have lost its relationship with the dance and there are lots of factors in the history regarding to that lost....
