Where Do I Fit In?
      Oscar Wilde once said, “Be yourself; everyone else is taken.” Just as the famous nineteenth century author and poet stated, all individuals have their own set of qualities and characteristics that makes them unique. For this reason and countless others, it is not befitting for us does not suit us to attempt to take on the role of another individual. Wherever a person may go, the essence of their personality generally remains steadfast, while the main aspect of it resonates to those around them. Each person experiences different situations throughout their lives that shapes their personality into who they are today. Personally, going through certain experiences concerning language, appearance, and behavior has allowed me to recognize the differences between two cultures that are embedded within me, essentially giving me a unique twist to my identity.

Living in the United States and being able to speak another language other than English may have several benefits, one of which is seeming “exotic” to those around you. But it also has some setbacks such as having a name that cannot be pronounced correctly because its letters are not found in the English alphabet. My name is Hala Elsamna. The way that my first name is pronounced in Arabic is much different from the way that I pronounce my name when I initially introduce myself to people who are non-Arab. This is because the first letter of my name is not pronounced precisely the same way that the “H” is in the English language. In Amy Tan’s essay, she suggests that “the language spoken in the family, especially in immigrant families which are more insular, plays a large role in shaping the language of the child” (Tan 399).
