Studying literature in high school is an essential part in becoming a better human being.   Benjamin Franklin was quoted: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”   Studying literature allows students to expand vocabulary and critical thinking. If a person is well read, it minimizes the chances of a prejudiced character. Reading a variety of books helps the young reader develop emotions, such as compassion. It is essential to review literature in high school as it has the potential to improve the performance of an individual.
Mastering language is a crucial tool required to be successful in life. Studying literature in high school provides students with advanced terminology to expand vocabularies.   A broad verbal communication is an indication of knowledge. The philosopher Francis Bacon stated: “knowledge is power”.   Reading enhances the rational and analytical skills of the mind.   Potent literature has concealed meanings obscured within the pages. The reader must reflect and decipher written works to arrive at valid assumptions. Higher education translates into a prosperous career.
It is uncommon to maintain a discriminatory and racist attitude if a person has knowledge from evaluating various genres in literature.   Exploring diverse cultures and viewpoints is fundamental in gaining an understanding of fellow human beings.   The only method to obtain such an exclusive acceptance of others’ dogmas is to experience them directly, from the inside looking out. Individuals who lack an open mind to acquire awareness about different societies are generally ignorant and prejudiced.   People tend to have animosity towards what the intellect does not comprehend.   The American author of the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury, wrote: “you don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture.
