How do women’s rights affect poverty? Job-wise, how do Muslim women having less rights affect their countries own poverty? Comparing the Muslim World to another female prejudiced area of the world, Latin America, the Muslim World’s economy is much weaker and their poverty is much higher. In Latin America, have been pushing, since the 1980’s, for gender equality (and since then, their economy’s been growing), but in areas like the Middle East, poverty causes conflicts and women are still somewhat trapped inside protective shells. In other words, rights of women help boost, when available, the economy, and decrease poverty.
As Obama noted, “women struggle for their rights all over the word, not just under Islam” (Pollitt).   However, in the Muslim World, “women are prevented from working to their capacity […] by religiously motivated sex discrimination” (Pollitt). This does not mean women aren’t allowed to work. In fact, Muslim women “have the right to seek employment that is both necessary and appropriate to their nature and societal needs” (Khalidah), jobs that include teaching, nursing, social work, medicine and business. To women who are Islamic, this is an achievement – since Islam caused certain social reforms, female infanticide and arranged marriage have decreased in quantity, and job opportunities bettered. But when compared to the more advanced women rights movement in Latin America, Islam still falls far behind. In Latin America, growth of female income “accounted for 30 percent of extreme poverty reduction” (Good Decade) from 2000-2010, and the “female labor market income was more than twice as effective as male labor market income in reducing the severity of poverty” (Good Decade). This boost in the size of the middle class in Latin America was mostly due to women’s rights – without the rights to work, and laws to protect their working rights, women wouldn’t have been having such an effect on their own economy and poverty rates.
